Draw Muhammad Day

As an artist and self-proclaimed peaceful freedom fighter, I cling to my first amendment rights. This is not because I believe the right to free speech is powerful enough to protect me from repercussions. It is because of my belief that this right SHOULD be powerful enough. When large corporations conspire with religious zealots to stop people from creating art or speaking truth, everyone must do what they can to stop them. This is what I can do: draw Muhammad.

I am very critical of religion, and I refuse to follow the teachings of anyone that promotes ignorance or violence. If Muhammad is as violent and intolerant as some of his followers, he does not deserve to be followed. If he is a kind and peaceful prophet, he not only deserves our worship; he also deserves for all people to stop committing atrocities in his name.

You can judge any religion by the actions of its followers.

I apologize if this post offends any peaceful Muslims. It is meant to be respectful and poignant, and not offensive.

  1. Even though I don’t believe Muhammad is a god, the directive not to draw a picture of him is not that objectionable. People can get wrapped up in the representation and lose sight of the greater sense of their god. When others try to disrespect their religion by doing something they are not allowed to do, these people are going to get mad. It is the disrespect of the religion and the rule that is inflaming the people. Americans act the same way about the flag. In my opinion, the same proportion of Americans get mad at this disrespect and become violent as those who get mad at people trying to draw Muhammad.

    1. … I never said they were. I said that violent people have no place in modern society. This includes religious fanatics that kill other people.

  2. The only reason to believe anything is because you think it is true. The only reason to disbelieve anything is because you think it is false. Religion should be judged, therefore, solely by whether or not it is true.

However, there certainly are many peace-loving Muslims in the world. Only a vocal minority are crazy and violent. Which followers are you going to use to judge the religion?
