California Prop 50 (Nov 2025)

*sigh* I plan to vote Yes on California Prop 50.

Do I think this is how things should work?

Of course not.

I don’t want to keep losing rights, freedoms, and funding for vital social services because I want to fight fair while oligarchs continue to ransack 99% of us. I’ve criticized Democrats for not using all the tools they have available to fix things for decades. This is no different.

Democracy Seems Fanciful

The more I learn about the actual processes we and other countries go through to perform democracy, the more I see how undemocratic it is. After watering down every ballot and making everyone voting and campaigning jump through thousands of ridiculous hoops, everyone ends up exhausted and easily satisfied with just the feeling of getting something done. Even if what actually happens only makes things worse.

I question if I’ve ever witnessed successful democracy.

I’m not even convinced democracy is the best way to run things. After all, I’m a minority in both demographics and values. I don’t really want to leave whether I’m supported or criminalized up to the majorities that either hate or disregard me. Majority opinion isn’t the end-all-be-all of deciding what’s right for everyone. I don’t necessarily believe in this dragon the opposition party is chasing.

Ends Justifying Means?

I do know how elections affect me and my loved ones. I have a record of acting and advocating toward best case scenarios while simultaneously voting for lesser evils. We can do both. I can’t really oppose the partisan skullduggery of Prop 50 on principle. The established system this all exists within is so far outside my principles that it’d be the equivalent of playing basketball using checkers tactics.

So sure. Let’s try to make it easier for the lesser evil(s) to win. Yes on Prop 50. Fuck it.
