Genre: Role-Playing
Graphics: 9.9

Overall:

46.9

Story: 9.0
Sound: 8.5
Replay: 9.5
Fun: 10.0

After Final Fantasy 9 completely redeemed them for the steaming pile that was Final Fantasy 8, I can say I still love Final Fantasy. I also loved Star Ocean: The Second Story and Grandia II. I considered them all good on the same level, but boy was I wrong!

When I popped Final Fantasy 10 into my PS2 for the first time on Christmas Day, I almost shat my pants. They’re talking! The graphics are spectacular! The character designs were vivid and beautiful, and the whole feel of it just plain rocked. Anyone who had lost his or her faith in Final Fantasy after 8, fear not, you are appeased! Final Fantasy 10 should satisfy even the pickiest Fantaseur.

The only negative thing I can think to say about this game is that it is currently my 2nd favorite game in the world. But, who can ever hope to surpass Final Fantasy 6? Squaresoft, Yamaguchi, Uematsu, and the rest do it again!

Graphics

Only a 9.9, because they didn’t sync the lips for the English version. *tisk tisk*

Story

No huge unexpected twist or grabbing suspense, but still very entertaining.

Sound

Great music, but Uematsu has done better. I’m beginning to think Final Fantasy 7 was his peak.

Replay Value

The Sphere Grid, Monster Arena, and AP System will keep me coming back.

Fun: I couldn’t put the damn controller down.

(EDIT 9/10/2014)

Wow, I forgot what a great first impression I had of Final Fantasy 10. I still agree with much of what I wrote here, but 10’s lack of gameplay complexity has definitely not made me want to return for a second playthrough in over 10 years now, so I’m going to call BS on my Replay Value comments.

I still think Nobuo Uematsu peaked in Final Fantasy 7. The only stuff I’ve really liked on that level since was Advent Children… which was just re-mastered and re-composed Final Fantasy 7.

It’s sort of like this console generation’s Final Fantasy 13 actually. Very pretty, very linear, with a decent story that doesn’t really come close to any of the best stories in the genre.
