Guild Wars 2: Who’s In?

Why You Should Check This Game Out

As many of you know, I’ve played lots of online games. Of those games, only two of them were MMORPGs that I stuck with: Final Fantasy XI for 3 years and World of WarCraft for 2. Since I left WoW shortly before the most recent expansion, I’ve been on the lookout for a new MMO to entice me into social gaming again. Final Fantasy XIV was a disaster that I couldn’t get through more than a weekend of, due to Square Enix’s complete lack of effort (or knowledge possibly) of how to build a MMORPG — an even more aggravating event considering SE had huge advantages that other studios couldn’t even dream of. Rift was fun for about a month, but kind of tapered off since none of my friends were into it like I was and there wasn’t much to do for a level 50 once I got there.

I was considering Star Wars: The Old Republic for a little while, since I’m becoming a big fan of BioWare lately, but the recent video of them doing an “Operation” (which is the exact same thing as a Dungeon Raid no matter how much they try to market it as some new groundbreaking thing. The combat looked incredibly boring. They had a tank. They had a healer or two. They had a bunch of DPS characters running around… but it looked so BORING. I’m tired of the same old MMO practices of looking for groups, daily quests, and trying to manage large groups for Raids when some people don’t show up or have to leave early. Then I heard about Guild Wars 2.

Ultimately, DPS/heal/tank just didn’t cut it in our book…er, game. Our players demand more from Guild Wars 2 and we intend to deliver on that demand instead of delivering more of the same. Not only is the trinity very formulaic, but it leaves out a lot of gameplay elements that make many other games so much fun. Instead, we break these trinity categories down into a cooler, more versatile system.

Needless to say, I was instantly interested. Since then, every bit of information that trickled out about GW2 has done nothing but increase my anticipation. If you’d like to see some of the things that excite me so much, here is a short list:

What I’m Doing

I am definitely playing a Charr. They have the coolest backstory I’ve seen for a game race in a while. Plus, they have that added benefit of being large, hairy motherfuckers with horns. This is a good way to make me want to play a race.

I’m most likely going to go Warrior, focused on using Axes/Maces/Greatsword. This all depends on how the mechanics “feel” when I get my hands on the game of course. Later in the game, I plan to go kind of tactical and focus on buffing my team mates and controlling combat while doing damage. I was also considering Engineer because their versatility looks awesome and I bet they’ll be badass in large-scale combat. Their gear looks cool, too.

So Who’s In?

Who would like to join the Guild Wars 2 MMO when it comes out [TBA, but rumored March 2012]? I already have a couple friends I know are going to join up, but I’d love to find more so we can play together! here’s who I know is playing so far:

  • Me — Kowalski, Ciaphas, Neza, Ultros, Phunbaba, Ouryu
  • Kati — Ninjairose, Ninjaikitty, Kiltlifter
  • DJ — Kouru
  • Jason — Dirtyore, Bifurious
  • Jeremy — ?
  • Jacob — Montu
  • Allen — Raagnar
  • Alex — Crunchy
  • Rob — Quinlinn
  • Rob — Sickness

We’ll probably getting a Guild together for everyone in our circles of course. A revival of the Sundercats may be in order if enough of us come along!
