That’s right. Just when I was beginning to truly appreciate her for all the wondrous things she does, she’s leaving. Apparently there are better things for her in Maryland than there are here with me in Las Vegas.

*sigh* I’m going to miss my new TV.

The Boondocks comic by Aaron McGruder. Huey says Riley, we're not in Chicago anymore. These people are well-off, comfortable. There are not the hard streets of the south side. Do you understand what I'm trying to say? Riley says I think so. I'm the hardest, baddest thing for miles, and I can run amok here without fear. Huey is frustrated by his response.

Cockeysville!

Kati got an awesome job that she’s been wanting for months now, working with a game company out there as a Lead Test Engineer. Hopefully they’ll have a position for me somewhere over there as well. They offered her slightly more money than the job she has — and hates — here in Vegas, so she’s excited to get started.

Originally, we were planning on moving out there together because the relocation package they set up for her was supposed to cover the fees for breaking our lease, but it turned out that our deeply discounted rent created a situation where it’d cost over five thousand dollars to break the lease, while just paying normal rent until the lease ended would cost only four thousand total. She has a cap on her relocation spending too, so that’d limit her other covered expenses. For this reason, and because I don’t have a job set up in Maryland yet, I opted to stay back here and take care of things until the lease runs out. This way I have 3-4 months to apply for jobs out there and I can also finish my contract with my current employer instead of bailing on them.

I’ll be moving to Cockeysville in the end of August or beginning of September. Until then, our apartment in Henderson will have my PC, my Magic cards, my bed, and myself… and little else. I wanted to keep only minimal accoutrements so I can drive out there in my Honda Accord without renting a U-Haul or paying to ship anything. I’m going to keep one pot to cook with, my toothbrush, shampoo, and other toiletries of course. And just enough clothing to do my normal weekly activities. Kati will be living it up with most of my toys until I get there.

The Boondocks comic by Aaron McGruder. A beautiful nature scene with trees and birds. Woodcrest's newest residents, Huey and Riley Freeman, explore their surroundings and continue to adjust to their new environment. Riley asks Huey What's that smell? Huey answers: Clean air. My guess is we'll get used to it eventually. Riley replies: I hope so. This place stinks!

I’m hoping that living for a few months in these conditions will encourage me to start exercising again and maybe even read a bit more. There are lots of nice places to hike near where we’re moving to in Maryland, so Kati will probably start exercising more too. We rarely watch television anymore, so we’re not even getting cable in the new place except for internet. We only use the TV for Blu-Rays, video games, and streaming Netflix movies. Both of us are pretty sure we’re quitting World of WarCraft soon too, but we’ve been saying that for months now.

I’m extremely excited to be on the east coast again. Using Google Maps I calculated the distance from our new home to different places of interest:

It’ll be great to be able to spend holidays with my family without expensive plane tickets! I’m happy that I’ll be close to many of my old friends as well. I’d love to spend weekends driving up to see you guys and catching up. Once we get settled in, I’m sure we can host some people coming down to visit us and hang out in Baltimore too. We’ve got a La-Z-Boy couch and an inflatable mattress for you cheap mofos!

Also: I’ll be able to see lots of Tennessee Titans and Pittsburgh Steelers games! Baltimore is even in the Steelers’ Division, so I can be one of those guys in the sea of black and purple waving the golden Terrible Towel. All three are relatively close, so I’ll still be able to see the games I care about on TV too (In Las Vegas, we see all the best games because of sports betting).

I’m going to miss the crap out of Las Vegas, though. The people I’ve met here have been awesome and I’ll try to keep in touch with them just like I would if I was still nearby. In any case, we have over 3 months to hang out before I leave, so let’s make the best of it!

The Boondocks comic by Aaron McGruder. Riley: We've been walking for ten minutes and haven't passed one subway stop, ball court, Chinese carry-out place, or rib shack! Huey shares Riley's disdain and replies: Riley, we are Pilgrims in an unholy land.

When I start driving the 40 hour trip from Vegas to Maryland, I’m going to be taking pictures and possibly recording myself talking deliriously from lack of sleep and abundance of caffeine. I’m hoping it’ll be hilarious, but if it’s not I’ll just post the photos.

I plan on doing the whole trip without a single hotel stay, because I’m cheap and I think it’ll be more interesting. Luckily, I won’t have a smell-o-vision camera for the inside of that car because I’m sure it will reek by the time I get to Cockeysville. More updates to come!
