Fatphobic Clickbait

Carolyn Hall is a terrible person who writes terrible clickbait content, and I’m proud that my comment on one of them “8 Things I Learned From Writing An Article Critical Of Fat Acceptance” (No, I will not link to that garbage) got more than 10x as many likes as the article did.

I’m considered morbidly obese by BMI standards simply because I’m short and have wide shoulders. I have perfect blood pressure, good cholesterol, and can run/swim/lift better than the average male my age.

Most people in the U.S. know someone who’s died of heart disease, let alone all the other problems associated with being heavy. I understand the correlation, but skinny people die of heart disease too.

Rest assured that you’re not necessarily seeing an unhealthy person every time you see a fat person. I’m happy to take that burden off your shoulders for you, you poor thing.

And insurance premiums are as high as they are because insurance companies have to make their billions in profit. That profit is what we call a mark-up or margin. It has very little to do with fat people making your bill higher and a lot more to do with the fantastic combination of greed, covering costs for the uninsured, and poor people being unable to afford healthy food.

Sure, being healthier than average may cost you a tiny bit more than ‘your share’ in your premiums, but unhealthy people aren’t the brunt of that expense. I’d also think it was worth it, since co-pays and deductibles still add up much more for those unhealthy people.

Now go ahead and write another purposely insensitive clickbait article that will get you your ad revenue. Go on, take that moral low ground.
